(Ahlul Bayt News Agency) - English students will be liable to tuition fees as high as £36,000 if they plan to attend Scottish universities next year. The current fee for high-ranking universities like Edinbugh, St Andrews, and Glasgow is £1800 a year, but this could rise to £9000.
However, Scottish students pay no fees as the taxpayers' money fully subsidizes their education. Moreover, under EU law, students from European Union countries are entitled to free education. This has resulted in discrimination in education.
The Scottish Parliament has claimed that these measures are being taken to make sure that the higher education institutions in this country are not looked upon as “cheap option.”
Scottish Conservative education spokeswoman, Liz Smith has criticised Mike Russell, the Scottish education secretary saying “if Mike Russell's plan is to stir up resentment in the rest of the UK against Scotland then he might well succeed. This measure is ill-thought out, vindictive and does nothing to address the long term funding pressures faced by the higher education sector in Scotland.”
With English universities already planning on fees as high as £9,000 a year, Russel claimed “the decisions being taken in England could threaten the quality and competitiveness of our universities.”
"We cannot allow Scotland to no longer be the best option and instead be known as the cheap option - we also must protect places for Scottish students,” he added.
